On August 27, 1853, Lincoln, Illinois was named for and by Abraham Lincoln.  It is the only town named for Lincoln before he became president.  Lincoln christened the town by squeezing the juice of a ripe watermelon from a nearby wagon full of melons.  After the christening, Lincoln shared his watermelon with a young onlooker.  The location of the christening is on the corner of Chicago and Broadway near the old train depot.
